Commercial Real Estate Summer Analyst

July - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Spending the summer with Deutsche Bank was one of the most rewarding internship experiences I could ask for. With a worldwide pandemic occurring, I had discounted my expectations for the internship and was pleasantly surprised at the Bank's ability to adapt to a digital internship format. The HR team at DB was fantastic in adopting the new format, and every day we met virtually with various heads of the US and European groups, gaining valuable insight into the current market environment, and learning what it means to be a part of Deutsche Bank. The internship was split into two segments: HR and divisional-specific training. In the two weeks with HR, we learned about the Bank's history, heard from various heads of the Bank's four divisions, and received training on financial modeling, market functions, working from home, in addition to many other resources. During the second segment in the Commercial Real Estate division, I was given full autonomy to familiarize myself with the two case studies, construct an analysis, and present my findings to the CRE team. Additionally, we had regular meetings with the leaders of the CRE divisions, gaining valuable insight into DB's CRE strategy on a global scale. The team was fantastic at making themselves available to answer questions, give insight into their specific roles at the Bank, or simply chat and get to know one another. Overall, I was most surprised by how many people have worked at the Bank for 10+ years. Initially, I was hesitant on accepting my internship offer due to the negative press the Bank has received over the years. During the internship, however, I was shocked at the progress of the Bank in addressing its past mistakes and implementing restructuring to ensure its longevity. I genuinely believe the Bank takes pride in investing in its employees, and it shows through the uniquely conducive work environment fostered at DB.

What I wish was different

Given COVID-19, the internship was shortened from 10-weeks to 4-weeks, and the interns were unable to work on live deals due to compliance and the virtual format. This was somewhat expected and understandable due to the sudden shifts in the work environment, and the changes were communicated to all interns prior to the start date.

Advice

Reach out to as many people as you can during your internship. I was shocked at how many people were willing to chat or answer questions, and the accessibility was one of the most rewarding aspects of interning with DB. The Bank has a huge amount of collective knowledge within its employee base, and it's up to you to take the initiative and utilize that resource.

Cash Management Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The people were the best part of the internship. From my manager to my fellow internship class, everyone was incredibly driven and were passionate about what they do. It really helped shape my view of working for a large, global organization.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything major could have been different. Deutsche Bank treated their interns really well with multiple intern events throughout the internship. We also had a day of volunteering at a local school. The work life balance was incredible and I was able to explore NYC with my fellow interns after work hours.

Advice

Go into every assigned task with an open mind. You can achieve a lot more than you initially think you can. It will help you in the long run if you push yourself in the beginning. You can do it!

Markets Summer Analyst

June - July 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Overall positive experience, since the role itself entails a lot of shadowing and not so much "real work", seniors would happily sit down and go over complex concepts, answer any questions you may have regarding different types of products.

What I wish was different

Nothing I could think of.

Advice

Even if you are an introvert, keep putting yourself out there and talk to as many people as possible during the summer to grow your network at the bank.
