What I liked

Everything! The benefits were amazing, my coworkers we so welcoming, and I was able to work on a variety of projects. It was fantastic real world experience and I can’t wait to start full time.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more networking between interns, but, since this occurred during COVID, this would have been very difficult.

Advice

Reach out to HR and get your managers contact so you can begin communication before your internship even starts.

What I liked

Everyone loved working there and was willing to help me with anything I needed. The other interns were inclusive and the program overall was awesome.

What I wish was different

I did a purely virtual internship and I would've liked to be able to come in and see the campus or meet my team.

Advice

Ask questions and get to know the people you're working with. Network and get involved in other aspects of the company, not just the job.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Transitioning anywhere out of college isn't easy, but every manager at Lockheed had the "open door policy", and it was incredibly easy to stop in and ask a quick question.

What I liked

Everyone was very kind, helpful, and treated me like a respected employee. I got a lot of hands-on experience to help enhance my college education and better myself as a future engineer.

What I wish was different

Coronavirus made the experience a little challenging at times but Lockheed did their best to make the best out of the situation. Despite the challenges, overall this was a great learning experience.

Advice

For future interns, do not be afraid to ask questions. This internship is a learning experience and it is up to you to make the most out of these experiences.

What I liked

My favorite part of my internship was when I got to go on a supplier visit to San Jose, California. We toured the other company’s floor and I was able to help run the meeting.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more confident coming in. You are chosen for a reason and you do have the necessary skill set for that job. Do not be discouraged because you are working around professionals because you are a professional in training.

Make friends! I had so much fun this summer and met so many great people.

What I liked

I loved this internship so so much. Everything about it was amazing. My favorite aspect about this was definitely that amazing and genuinely kind team I was fortunate to get assigned to. My supervisor was so skilled in leadership and taught me so many important things about working at Lockheed. The most memorable thing he asked me was what I was looking to get from this internship, and I told him I wanted real world applications to match my electrical engineering major. He definitely delivered, and the experience was overall outstanding.

What I wish was different

My internship was completely virtual, and I wish I had the opportunity to be there in person and experience their labs. But even through this challenge I took advantage of the opportunity and made strong relationships and memorable experiences.

Advice

I would just say, through any situation or challenge you come across in any internship, take the opportunity and make the most of it. Ask so many questions and learn as much as you can. It is so important that you get that unique experience that will help you stand out. That’s the point if the internship.

What I liked

I have worked two summers at Lockheed and it has been an extremely enjoyable experience. As my first job in industry, I was pleasantly surprised that we were not expected to know everything and everyone I worked with was extremely helpful. Lockheed has wonderful, friendly employees. My managers have been extremely kind, thoughtful and other than the job experience, and new knowledge, have been one of my favorite parts about my internships. The best first in industry job I could have asked for, especially after hearing from other students about their internships.

What I wish was different

I wish COVID had not been a problem this summer. It would have been great to explore the facility more. Lockheed itself did all that it could. Only essential workers were coming in for the most part and we were required to wear masks so I felt relatively safe.

Advice

I think speaking to everyone and creating connections throughout the company is very important. Those connections can help you later on in life, not only with future employment but also with the knowledge that they've collected over the years. I would also encourage future interns to explore the area Lockheed takes them to. My first internship was in Maryland and I drove all over and it was amazing to see a new area.

What I liked

Lockheed was able to create a strong virtual internship program in such little time. I was very impressed by the virtual events they hosted biweekly for the interns so that all 500 of us could learn more about what each business unit at the company does. Also, my team was always supportive and gave me impactful projects to work on.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to work in person, but I appreciate Lockheed valuing our safety and switching most of the interns to a virtual platform.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! At first, I felt a bit intimidated by some of the employees on the leadership team. However, I realized that they like to help and appreciate when someone asks, especially an intern who is still learning.

What I liked

Spent Summer working on One of LM's Space systems in a manufacturing capability. Loved spending time working on real engineering problems instead of general intern busy work. My work was important and highly appreciated.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately due to Covid-19 there were alot of restriction when it came to work. While i was able to work onsite 100% of the time the majority of the team did not so i was unable to meet face to face and generate personal connections with alot of the seniority on the project

Advice

I received the internship by cold calling the director of one of the programs and connecting with him because he was an alumni of UNO. When spending time working I took more and more responsibilities and work onto myself indebting myself to the team. when time came to negotiate a permanent position I was able to skip two levels and start in a leadership position. My Advice which has worked well for me is to be aggressive. A lot of people will tell you to know your worth and i think that is the wrong mentality. You decide what you are worth so you might as well make yourself priceless. Fight for what you want and take chances. Fight for more money always.

The team I worked on did a good job of inviting myself and the other interns to meetings and one-on-ones to talk about what they do.

What I wish was different

Working from home was less ideal than if I had been able to work on-site, but I understand the reason for remote work.

Advice

Talk to everyone you can! Even working from home, you can make connections with a wide variety of people in different departments outside of just your team.

What I liked

Despite being an online internship, Lockheed was extremely prepared to provide me with as many opportunities as they could while I was working with them. They gave me countless opportunities to explore my own interests as well as follow some guided projects.

What I wish was different

No question the internship would have been enhanced if it was in person, but other than that I would not have changed anything.

Advice

One piece of advice would be to really work hard to network while on campus and over different platforms to get your name out there. The more people you know the more likely you are to find someone who can get you on board. In addition, don't let the networking stop there. It is still important to be relevant at your company once you start so you have support by your co-workers and you can learn more about other opportunities within the company a well.
