The Home Depot

Sales Associate

April 2020 • Cranberry Township, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed learning how to interact with customers at a retail store. Many different customer interactions caused me to learn how to approach certain people and lead them to what they need.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have received more hours, but given it was a part time position, I did manage to pull in about 30-36 hours per week.

Advice

That the sale of a product is all about how much you truly value the customer and the company you work for, not forcing them to buy something that they do not need.

What I liked

Lots of customer service and interacting with others on the Home Depot team.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more of a intent on training instead of throwing associates out into the aisles.

Retail

October 2019 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

Made some friends, got that bread, and was able to fit my schedule to be able to do my summer classes as well so that was nice.

What I wish was different

I wish the coronavirus didn't happen. Working outside in the heat during summer is already rough, but add wearing a mask and having to do everything very differently to abide by safety regulations and it was one of the harshest summers I had been through.

Advice

I would say to try not to get burned out. Pace yourself and you'd be surprised by how durable the human body is and what it can take. Just try not to abuse that power for your own sake.

Cashier

May 2018 • Cranberry Township, PA

What I liked

I have great coworkers who made going to work enjoyable. The company also holds many events for their staff to show appreciation.

What I wish was different

I really enjoy my job and there’s not much I’d change about it. I do think there could have been more COVID precautions taken to keep staff safe after we went into the green phase.

Advice

My advice would be to make friends with and get to know your coworkers. I would also advise to understand that there will be good and bad customers and just to remain calm and not let the bad ones get to you.

Software Engineer Intern

June - July 2020 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

It was a virtual experience due to coronavirus however THD made sure to take care of their interns. Throughout the internship we had mentors to give us advice and sessions for career development. What I liked the most was how team oriented everyone was and THD's cultural atmosphere.

What I wish was different

Of course I wouldve liked an in person internship but they did great creating this virtually. I cannot complain.

Advice

To not be scared to ask questions even if you think you are being annoying. You will learn so much more than you ever have in such a short time period so take advantage of it.

Cashier

May 2020 • Buford, GA

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to learn many valuable skills such as using a POS system, engaging with the customers, flatstacking, etc. I also enjoyed the work environment as well as the other employers as everyone was friendly and worked hard.

What I wish was different

There weren't many complaints. Maybe a greater pay rate considering the tasks we were doing.

Advice

One piece of advice I would offer is that I recommend is to always be there for the customer and always smile because even that simple gesture goes a long way and allows for a more satisfied customer.

Cashier

What I liked

The Benefits- Students enrolled in college can apply for scholarships each semester, so it's very helpful to work here when you're in school. Starting in July, The Home Depot also gave out benefits to employees for working during the COVID-19 pandemic. You got bonus pay for working X amount of hours, and by filling out the required health survey before each shift, you made some extra cash, too! The Flexibility- I gave the HR staff my schedule and they assigned me shifts, plus part-time employees only had to work one day every weekend. Head Cashiers- Most head cashiers are friendly and are willing to help answer any questions.

What I wish was different

Treatment of new cashiers- One of the supervisory full-time cashiers treated new cashiers poorly when they messed something up on the job. Most of the mistakes were because the cashier had not been trained properly or told the correct protocol, but the supervisor was very harsh when they didn't know how to do things they had never been trained on.

Advice

If you are currently enrolled in college, I highly suggest this job! The pay is above minimum wage and it's very easy, plus you get a lot of benefits. You can also take leave of absence whenever you want and The Home Depot is required to keep your position open for you when you return, so you can work whenever you want during the whole year as long as you give timely notice!

Cashier

May - August 2020 • Chubbuck, ID

What I liked

I loved my other co workers. They were friendly. I also loved the management there. They know how to run a store efficiently.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been an opportunity to do something else other than cashiering. It gets boring standing there all day waiting for customers to come check out.

Advice

It is a great summer job with great pay. If you keep working with them then there is a chance to get a new position within the company and work your way up.

Cashier

May - August 2020 • Ben Avon, PA

What I liked

The low requirement--I had plenty of time to sit and think and enough mental energy to go home and read.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten better with listening to people in a line--it's important that each customer feels served well, not just that they're all served quickly.

Advice

Be attentive and know as much as you can; you never know when you're gunna get asked a question or a customer will request you to look up a product for them.
