Flooring associate

March 2021 • Columbia, SC

What I liked

I like how flexible Home Depot is with my school schedule. They are willing to allow you to work in new departments and gain more experience. I’ve only been working there for 7 months and I already know how to do more than half of the departments at the store, the management is so helpful and sweet and they are always there to help you grow. You also create great friendships and long lasting relationship with the employees. We even get a calendar of different dress days to when fun, we recently had pajama day and it was amazing. Working there is great and I’m glad I can still work here while in college.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish that was different is the amount of staffing in certain days. Sometimes I would get left with two or more departments and it gets kinda hard, so some help would be really nice, but the managers are really helpful when it’s low staffed.

Advice

Make sure you speak up about what you need and how much you wanna work, because they will work wit you the best they can. Communication with management is key, don’t be afraid to talk to them.

My coworkers and managers were great and easy to work with.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more shadowing and direct training rather than virtual training.

Advice

Asking for help is always a good option when you don’t know how to approach a problem.

Home Depot associate

September 2021 - May 2022 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I enjoyed how I got to interact with customers and other associates, making everyone's lives a little bit easier by helping them with their projects. It always excites me to put a smile on someone's face!

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have stayed longer, and I would like to have had more experience in my department so I can better help the customers.

Advice

I would like to share that the bosses and employees were very friendly, however, some of the customers may not be as cordial. This is a good time for us as employees to learn how to deal with stressful situations and better our people skills.

Freight and Receiving associate

May 2018 - November 2020 • Woodstock, GA

What I liked

company stock options benefit

What I wish was different

needed more help

Advice

This demanding work was unloading overstuffed trucks that were unsafely packed and required fast work to get products unloaded from the trucks and restocked on the shelves in only a few hours. Full-time co-workers expected part-time employees to work extra hours to help cover staffing shortages.

Brand Advocate Analyst Intern

May - July 2022 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

The Home Depot has an unparalleled value system. I felt welcomed into the company immediately. There are over 250 interns from all across the country, so I was able to meet many other students. There didn't seem to be a competitive atmosphere, because I believe more than half of the interns receive job offers at the end.

What I wish was different

My experience was virtual, so I wish we had more time to spend in the corporate office.

Advice

Be inquisitive. They like students who are curious about the company and who are driven to move the company forward. As long as you insert yourself in conversations with respect and confidence, they are excited to hear your fresh perspective.

Store Operations Intern

May - July 2022 • Smyrna, GA

What I liked

During this experience, I was able to connect with some of the brightest minds in retail and collaborate on some of the complex problems they are trying to solve. Also, I had a project that was meaningful and certainly added value to the company.

What I wish was different

This was an amazing experience, I just wish it was in person the entire time! Due to COVID restrictions, we were only able to visit the corporate office a few times throughout our visit. THD made the most of these visits and packed a lot of project time, networking, and development opportunities!

Advice

A piece of advice I would share is to soak everything in like a sponge. You're about to be in for an amazing experience, and there are many different opportunities with this company. Remember names and faces as you're networking across other teams because they may be your next boss! And if you think Home Depot might not be for you, you're very mistaken. There's everything from pilots to software designers to frontline cashiers, there is certainly something for you and your talent!

What I liked

I liked the experience of working in a retail environment and working with customers one on one. This really helps out considering I'm a marketing major.

What I wish was different

I don't really wish anything would have been different. I guess I wish I had found the job position earlier on.

Advice

The Home Depot is a great company to work for and has amazing benefits. I really recommend this company to others!

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Austin, TX

What I liked

Fully remote, interesting project and great team supporting me. They have great seminars, executive meetups and helpful meetings with regional directors who you might work under in the future.

What I wish was different

You don't get to know if you will be partnered with other interns or not until the first day. It would have been nice to know before hand, but it's not a problem. Make sure to make friends with the other interns!

Advice

Since it's remote, you really need to put yourself out there and ask to speak with people and to ask who else you should schedule a coffee chat with. You won't get many opportunities to speak with engineers outside your team directly otherwise.

Marketing&Online Intern

May - August 2022 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Lots of opportunities to network and meet associates. They encourage you to learn things outside of your position. They prepare everyone to return for another summer as an intern or a full-time position.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to choose the team I worked on myself.

Advice

Do not be afraid to network before interviewing and after accepting an offer. Associates are so welcoming, and networking is a big part of their company.

The professional development opportunities, as well as the chance to take your initiative and explore different silos within Home Depot

What I wish was different

I wish there was a more structured calendar of what our summer would look like - ie days we had off and busy periods

Advice

Network, network, network. THD values connections built throughout the company, especially when it comes to the rehiring period. Everyone is so supportive, and you learn a lot. Just stay up to date with due dates and make sure you don't overload your bandwidth.

Truck Unloading Team

June 2021 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

The hours were consistent, the team and leadership was great, and really excited about having me back to work over breaks.

What I wish was different

There were some HR type event that really just took away time we could have been working. One of the most obvious to me was the team stretching, led by their manager, before starting shifts. I understand why this looks like a good move to show the company's commitment to employee safety, but as a former athlete I know that stationary stretching does not prevent muscle straining or injuries. Dynamic stretching before a exercise will do that, but stationary before exercise is completely ineffectual - a little disappointing they couldn't have done just a bit of research.

Freight Handler

June - August 2021 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I liked how it was very independent and you could work at your own pace. They were flexible with hours and paid great.

What I wish was different

I wish the tasks were organized more efficiently. A lot of days, we were not able to finish the freight and it culminated over a couple days. There was also a lack of communication between the department and store management, where we were given unreasonable productivity standards.

Advice

This is a job for someone who likes to get dirty and has a high work ethic. You will likely be working nights so be sure you are ready to adapt your sleep schedule. There is also a lot of independent work so talk to you coworkers if you have questions.
