Flooring Associate

June - August 2019 • Muskegon, MI

What I liked

The people really care to help you learn how to do your job and do it well. Managers were always helpful, being the extra hand I needed when there were customers I was too busy (with other customers) to help.

What I wish was different

You are dropped in your role rather suddenly. There were a few people I worked with who were just put on their own by their third shift, which is just not enough time to be properly trained. The lack of communication between management and lower levels was also fairly common, and created problems at times.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions. You are not going to memorize everything, so don't feel bad about asking for help or looking up the answer.

Lumber Associate

May - July 2019 • Shorewood, IL

What I liked

The management team and other associates were kind and we all got along well. There were many morale boosting events hosted by the store throughout the year. The pay, for the amount of work I was expected to regularly perform, was fair.

What I wish was different

I had entered this position expecting to work the entire summer. I was unaware that the season according to the company referred to May and June instead of May through August. I was laid off in July. Not fired as the manager and assistant manager insisted this was a decision from corporate and that I was welcome to apply again at a later date.

Advice

Make sure that you fully understand the language of the job offer you are applying for. Your definition and the company's definition of words may not be the same. Also, having a more open availability will increase the likelihood that you will receive hours and be kept on when others are let go.

Customer Service Representative

June - August 2019 • Mansfield, MA

What I liked

Working customer service means every day is something new, and no two shifts are exactly alike. This job experience is a fantastic opportunity to grow your communication skills, as it is your responsibility to communicate and advocate for the customer and their needs, in person and on the phone.

What I wish was different

I wish the online training was updated to match the new systems currently in use at the service desk.

Advice

Working retail customer service is an experience I believe everyone should do at least once in their lives! I will admit customer service can be frustrating at times, but it was still overall a fun and challenging job experience. If you are looking for an opportunity to improve/grow your communication skills, I highly suggest working a Customer Service position. As a Service Desk employee, in the eyes of the customer, you are the face of the company!

Specialty Supervisor

July 2015 • Euless, TX

What I liked

The aspect I like the best is the people. There is a sense of family and community at the Euless location.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to accept this role earlier on in my career rather than wait so long before deciding to give it a try.

Advice

Step into the role rather than fear it. More responsibility can be scary, but it's a good thing.

Customer Service Representative

May 2019 • Collierville, TN

What I liked

I love the work environment. My coworkers are terrific and always helpful. If I want extra hours, all I have to do is give them a call; then I'd be at work in the afternoon. Although the customers can be a bit much. So, I would not recommend this job if you do not have patience, tolerance, or are a minority. I've had customers call me derogatory terms for being gay and racist (all because the system wouldn't let me return their ten year old drill), and have seen my coworker called the n-word. I find it best to show them the door and say have a great day. It took me a month to get the hang of things, but I am somewhat of a slow, yet innovative learner.

What I wish was different

I wish Collierville people and Germantown people weren't so entitled. I have a customer who comes in and brags about his "84,000 square foot house" and his two precious $25,000 chandeliers while I process his return for 52 cents. He never bothers to remember me, so he has the same exact conversation with me every time. Other than entitled customers, everything else is perfect.

Advice

It really humbles you. I think every one should work three months in customer service and in the fast food industry so that there is more understanding. It is super rewarding when people let you help them. I've had multiple customers come in and at the end they gave me hugs.
